The northbound lanes of Newport Boulevard between 17th and 18th streets were closed for about 2 hours Friday morning as a precaution after a canvas ammunition bag that was suspected to contain a bomb was found outside a gun store in the 1700 block of the street.
Costa Mesa police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad were summoned to Grant Boys gun and sporting goods store at 8:30 a.m., when store vice president Jack Carver discovered the military-style bag on the ground about 3 feet from the entrance to the store, according to Costa Mesa Police Lt. Sam Cordeiro.
Bomb Squad officers, using a remote-controlled robot device, found that the bag contained two empty ammunition clips designed to fit either a semi- or fully automatic rifle, but no explosives, Cordeiro said.
