Murder on TV

Neal R. Peirce’s outstanding column “Murder on the Dial: Does Television Set the Killers Loose?” (Op-Ed Page, April 23) pointed out that the media with emphasis on violence often motivates destructive behavior and ignites the spark for violence. By providing models with instruction on how to attack people, television and films have become schools for violence.
Some people concerned with civil liberties argue that the First Amendment protects even violence in the media. Higher standards and entertaining programming contribute positive attitudes. Pressure brought on advertisers and company executives, who are concerned about their public image, through letters and calls, has caused several advertisers to remove financial support from violent programs. Write for positive programming! The challenge of civilization is to secure liberty consistent with the general welfare.
