Gunman Kills Driver as He Gets Into Van
An Atlantic Richfield refinery worker leaving his Carson home for work with a colleague was shot and killed Friday by a gunman apparently hiding in the back of his van, sheriff’s deputies said.
The victim was not immediately identified.
After shooting the 55-year-old man in the chest, the gunman also fired at the man’s co-worker, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the van, but he missed, Deputy Dan Cox said, adding that the attacker then fled.
The co-worker drove the van about a block back to the victim’s house at 250 Carriagedale Drive, where the victim died.
Cox said the victim had just driven away from his home about 5:20 a.m. when the gunman appeared from the back of the van and fired at him.
The motive for the attack was not immediately known and no suspects were in custody.
