Temple Signs to Play Basketball for USD

Lincoln High’s Joe Temple, a member of the The Times’ All-County team, Wednesday signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the University of San Diego.

Temple was a three-year starter for the Hornets and the county’s third-leading scorer this past season, averaging 26.1 points. He also averaged 14.1 rebounds and 6.4 steals while helping lead Lincoln (27-2) to its second consecutive San Diego Section Division III championship.

Temple, 17, began playing basketball in the ninth grade. In three years at Lincoln, he scored 1,313 points and had 1,265 rebounds, and he holds section records for steals in a career (398), season (187) and game (15).

“His playing ability is endless,” said Ron Loneski, Lincoln coach. “I’m happy to see him go to a school like USD. I think Hank Egan (USD coach) is a heck of a coach.”

Temple, a tight end, also received a scholarship offer to play football at San Diego State, and he high jumped 6-feet-6 in track last season.

PRO TENNIS

Manuela Maleeva, the No. 9 player in the world, will join top-ranked Steffi Graf for the $200,000 Great American Bank Tennis Classic, July 31-Aug. 6 at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

Maleeva recently won a tournament at Indian Wells and was bronze medalist at the Seoul Olympics.

RUNNING

The San Diego Track Club will play host to the 23rd Palomar Pentathlon, which features five running events, Saturday at Balboa Stadium at 9 a.m. (Some local running calendars have listed an incorrect day and date for the event.)

The event will include runs of 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters, with a half-hour rest in between each. It will include an age-handicapping system to determine relative performances.
