P.M. BRIEFING : Writers Guild, East, Joins AFL-CIO

NEW YORK — The Writers Guild of America, East, which represents 3,200 writers for television, movies and news programs, voted to join the AFL-CIO, officials reported today.
Union members, at a special membership meeting Wednesday night, voted overwhelmingly to join the national labor federation, guild Executive Director Mona Mangan said.
The Writers Guild, East, was founded as an independent union in 1954 and its members work east of the Mississippi River. The decision does not involve the Writers Guild, West, which represents writers in the rest of the United States.
As a result of the vote, the Writers Guild of America, East, will become part of the Department for Professional Employees of the AFL-CIO.
