Victim of N.Y. Attack Improves, Is Taken Off Critical List

NEW YORK — The 28-year-old woman who was raped and beaten in Central Park three weeks ago improved Tuesday, prompting doctors to change her condition from critical to serious.
Dr. Robert Kurtz of Metropolitan Hospital said the woman “shows further evidence of slow progress in recovery from her neurological injuries.”
In a news release, Kurtz said the woman has been able to recognize objects, such as a stethoscope. She was able to describe it by its function but not its name, he said.
Her maximum temperature was 99.7 degrees, he said, “which implies continued healing of her pneumonia.” The woman has battled pneumonia and high fever in the last 10 days.
The woman, an investment banker, was attacked by a gang of youths on April 19 as she ran through Central Park.
