Fete Violence Brings Call for Involvement

The United Neighborhoods Organization on Tuesday called for more community involvement in planning Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
Leaders of the activist organization decried the violence that marred a celebration in Lincoln Park in Lincoln Heights on Sunday, when about 150 police officers were called to quell a disturbance caused by drunkenness and violence among street gangs at a concert.
“The big problem Sunday was that the community was not involved in the planning and the arranging for security,” UNO official Louis Negrete said at a news conference at Lincoln Park. “If the community is involved, we will defend these parks.”
City Councilman Richard Alatorre, who represents Lincoln Park, plans to investigate the incident last Sunday, according to his press secretary, Brad Sales. Sales said that community groups had been included in the event’s planning.
