NATION : King Holiday Commission Extended

WASHINGTON — Congress approved a five-year extension of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday Commission today and sent the legislation to President George Bush, who has indicated that he will sign it.

The House, on a vote of 359 to 42, passed the bill in the same form approved by the Senate last week, on a vote of 90 to 7. The measure gives the commission a five-year budget of $1.5 million.

Last month, the House approved a bill to make the commission permanent, with a yearly budget of $500,000. The commission has received no federal appropriation since its creation in 1984.
