IN BRIEF : Cowboys Invite White to Try Again

IRVING, Tex. — Veteran Dallas quarterback Danny White, a free agent, met Thursday with new Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and was told that the team would like to have him compete for a job in the 1989 season.
“We had a very productive meeting, and we’re trying to work something out before quarterback school starts next week,” Jones said.
White, a 14-year veteran, said: “There’s no guarantee whatsoever that I’ll be on the roster in August. But I was told that if I did play and did my job that I would be compensated fairly.”
The Cowboys recently made UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman the first pick in the NFL draft and agreed to pay him $11 million, but Coach Jimmy Johnson does not want to put immediate pressure on Aikman by naming him the starter.
Steve Pelluer, last year’s starter, is also without a contract and recently drew Johnson’s ire by missing a mini-camp.
