Steffi Graf of West Germany, the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, defeated Nicole Jagerman of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-1 today and advanced to the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Graf, winner of tennis’ Grand Slam and the Olympic gold medal last year, had to struggle against Jagerman in the first set but finally found her stride and won the match in 70 minutes.

Graf, 19, had no trouble in the second set against Jagerman, who is ranked 104th in the world.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria was upset by Argentina’s Bettina Fulco 7-5, 6-3.

Nathalie Tauziat of France advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sweden’s Catarina Lindquist, and Austria’s Barbara Paulus defeated Sylvia Hanika of West Germany 6-4, 6-3.
