USAir on Tuesday added a new wrinkle to the air fare war for passengers flying between Northern and Southern California--the nation’s busiest air corridor--with a new low fare from Los Angeles International Airport.

It offered immediately a $58 round-trip fare from Los Angeles to Oakland for passengers who purchase tickets 21 days in advance. Until recently, that fare was available from San Diego and other Los Angeles suburban airports to some Northern California airports.

USAir’s new fare structure includes: $78, 21-day advance purchase, round-trip fares from Los Angeles to San Francisco or San Jose; from Burbank to Oakland, San Francisco or San Jose; from Orange County to Oakland, San Francisco or San Jose, and from Long Beach to San Francisco.

By late Tuesday, Continental, American, United and Northwest were also offering the $78 fare.

USAir also implemented a $118, unrestricted round-trip fare from Los Angeles to Oakland.
