Golf Roundup : Geiberger-Henning Team Retains Lead in Legends

Al Geiberger and Harold Henning held onto their lead in the $650,000 Legends of Golf at Austin, Tex., Saturday by shooting an eight-under-par 62 in the third round.

The pair opened the tournament with consecutive 61s and have been on top since the first round.

Their 54-hole total of 184 gives them a two-shot lead over first-round co-leaders Bob Charles and Bruce Devlin.

Charles and Devlin shot their second 61 on the 6,367-yard, par-70 Onion Creek Club course. Their three-round total was 186.

Three teams were tied for third in the two-man, better-ball event. Tied at 20 under, six behind the leaders, were defending champions Orville Moody-Bruce Crampton, Billy Casper-Gay Brewer and Gardner Dickinson-Dave Hill.

The Senior PGA Tour event includes a Legendary Champions division where players over 60 compete for a $150,000 share of the purse.

The team of Mike Souchak-Joe Jimenez had the hottest round of the day in that division, shooting a 64 to tie Roberto De Vicenzo-Charlie Sifford at 13-under 197.

Doug Ford and Jerry Barber were a stroke back while Sam Snead, who injured his back Thursday and nearly withdrew, birdied four holes on the back nine, including 16, 17 and 18. He and partner Bob Goalby were at 10 under.

Kathy Postlewait shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Betsy King and Val Skinner after two rounds of the $425,000 Sara Lee tournament at Nashville, Tenn.

Postlewait, who opened with a 68 Friday, has a 36-hole total of 10-under-par 134 on the 6,242 Hermitage Course while King, who shot a 68, and Skinner, with a 67, both are at 135.

Colleen Walker, who had a first-round 66 to be one of the tournament’s five co-leaders after 18 holes, shot a two-under 70 and is two strokes out of the lead.

Nancy Lopez, another first-round leader, is another shot back at 137 after a 71.
