Manhattan Beach resident Carole Wagner Vallianos has been elected president of the League of Women Voters of California. She will be installed at the state league’s 53rd convention, which concludes today in Concord. South Bay delegates to the state convention are Linda Mack, president of League of Women Voters of the Beach Cities, and Marlys Robertson, Ethel Rudawitz, Jeanne Leuschner, Peggy Bartlett, Susan Jackson and Mignon Thiem-Murphy.
Dale Van Natta of El Segundo has been chosen to receive the 1988-89 Community Service Award from Cal State Dominguez Hills. Van Natta is director of civic and community relations for TRW, which has been the university’s partner on a number of educational projects over the years. The most recent is Project SEED, which promotes an early interest in math and science among elementary school students.
Ricardo Soliz Jr., 17, son of Ricardo and Mary Soliz of Wilmington, is the winner of a $10,000 college scholarship awarded annually to children of employees of U.S. Borax and Chemical Corp. A student at Banning High School in Wilmington, Ricardo plans to attend Pomona College in Claremont. He carries a 3.8 grade-point average, is the vice president of the Interact Club, winner of the Lions’ Speech Tournament, a member of the school’s marching band, and works as a college peer counselor. Also receiving a scholarship is Gregg Swartz, son of Glenn and Mary Lu Swartz of Palos Verdes Estates.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Los Angeles Music Center, the Peninsula Committee for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra recently welcomed members of the orchestra as guest artists at its April salon. Performing in the Rolling Hills home of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Probst, music director John Currie joined chorale members Linda Sauer and Pam Ervin, sopranos, Natalie Beck, alto, David Larson, tenor, and Ed Levy and Kenneth Knight, basses.
Lee Jett of Rancho Palos Verdes and Lorraine Davidson, formerly of Torrance and now living in Hesperia, are recipients of the Volunteer Center’s Jean Fraser Award, presented annually for the past three years in honor of Fraser, who died in 1986 after many years of service to the center. Jett, a former probation officer and warden of the Terminal Island Prison, does volunteer work as a court referral counselor. Davidson was board president for the center and was on the advisory council for 10 years.
Palos Verdes Estates resident Morgan McCall Jr., a senior research scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations at USC School of Business Administration, has won the 1989 Johnson Smith & Knisely Award for New Perspectives on Executive Leadership for his recent book, “The Lessons of Experience: How Successful Executives Develop on the Job.†McCall and the book’s co-authors, Michael Lombardo and Ann Morrison, jointly received the $5,000 award.
Flo McTaggart, director of the Hawthorne Senior Citizen Center, and Linda Pittman, senior citizen director for the city of Lawndale, have each received a check for $3,000 to benefit their senior citizen programs. The $6,000 was raised through a charity professional-amateur golf tournament, sponsored by Century 21 Rustic Realty.
