The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District approved a management plan to remove and replace asbestos throughout the district at an estimated cost of $74,000.
The management plan outlines steps the district needs to take to comply with standards of the Asbestos Hazards Emergency Response Act of 1987. It was written by Asbestos Environmental Controls Inc., a company hired by the district to inspect and test all school buildings.
The district estimates that it will cost about $65,000 to remove and repair the asbestos at Malibu Park-Cabrillo schools, Santa Monica High School and Lincoln Middle School. It is also recommended that the district spend an additional $9,000 in operation and maintenance at all 18 sites.
The asbestos will be removed this summer.
