Geoffrey Scott Schelin, a 20-year-old gunners mate third class from Costa Mesa who was killed at sea in the explosion aboard the battleship Iowa, will be buried Friday with full military honors, a Navy spokesman said.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. at Costa Mesa Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A burial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach.
Lt. Cmdr. Steve Chesser said the Navy is planning a military funeral, including a military honor guard, rifle salute and taps at the memorial park at 3500 Pacific View Drive. He said such funerals are given to sailors who die during active duty.
Schelin grew up in Costa Mesa and enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from Estancia High School in 1986.
Schelin died April 19 when an explosion ripped through a gun turret on the Iowa, killing 47 sailors, during a training exercise.
His parents, Dale and Darleen Schelin, live in Lake Forest.
