Kenyan Douglas Wakiihuri put on a burst of speed in the final 300 yards and beat Australia’s Steve Moneghetti and longtime rival Ahmed Salah of Djibouti in the London Marathon.
Wakiihuri, the 1987 world champion and the silver medalist at the Seoul Olympics, ran the 26-mile, 385-yard course in 2 hours 9 minutes 3 seconds, edging Moneghetti by three seconds. Salah was six seconds behind Wakiihuri.
Veronique Marot of England was the first women’s finisher, in 2:25:56, making her the seventh-fastest women’s marathoner in history.
In California, Brad Hawthorne of Oakland won the Big Sur International Marathon with a time of 2:20:28, a full five minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. In the women’s race, Ann Trason of Berkeley won in 2:46:58.
