High School Roundup : Newbury Park Remains Tied for First With 6-5 Victory Over Westlake

Trailing Newbury Park High by two runs with two out in the seventh inning Wednesday, Westlake staged a three-hit rally but fell short and lost the Marmonte League baseball game, 6-5, at Westlake.

With Newbury Park leading, 6-4, Rob Neal and Mike Lieberthal singled for Westlake (8-11, 2-5 in league play). Chuck Foster followed with a single to left-center field to drive Neal in from second before a ground out ended the rally. Geoff Black and Chris Marsden each homered and doubled for Newbury Park (15-2-3, 6-1).

The names of the players who hit home runs in Newbury Park High’s 6-5 win over Westlake were incorrectly reported in Thursday’s editions. Geoff Black and Danny Madsen each hit home runs.

Tim Beal (5-0) gave up seven hits and struck out six for the win, which kept the Panthers tied with Simi Valley for the league lead.

In another Marmonte game:

Thousand Oaks 8, Channel Islands 5--Mike McNellis gave Thousand Oaks a 6-1 lead in the third with a two-run triple at Channel Islands. Thousand Oaks sophomore Brian Sturges had three hits and Scott Barkman added two.

John Bushart (6-1) pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing three earned runs while striking out eight.

VALLEY PAC-8 CONFERENCE

Sylmar 7, Birmingham 6--Justin Bass and Josh Brown each had run-scoring hits for Birmingham in the seventh before Nino Romo got the final out at Birmingham.

Bruce Gomez had three hits, including a double, Phillip Moreno had two hits and Jose Gallegos homered for Sylmar.

Poly 6, Van Nuys 3--The Wolves committed four of their seven errors in a three-run fourth inning that also included a two-run single by Ray Lozano.

Mike Engler singled in two runs in the first inning to give Van Nuys a 2-1 lead, but Mario Gomez went the distance for Poly (7-2).

North Hollywood 10, Reseda 5--North Hollywood (1-12) broke into the win column by batting around for six runs in the fourth inning.

Mike Buch, Sammy Ciramillaro and Adolfo Wong each drove in two runs each for the Huskies.

NORTHWEST VALLEY CONFERENCE

San Fernando 3, Canoga Park 1--Frank Serna threw a three-hitter and struck out six for the Tigers at Canoga Park.

Mark Ferris had two hits, including a run-scoring single in the fourth for Canoga Park. Jason Mitchell threw a three-hitter for Canoga Park.

Chatsworth 4, Cleveland 2--The Chancellors rallied for three unearned runs in the fifth at Cleveland. Rich Aude had two doubles and three hits and Jason Evans added a triple for Chatsworth. Pat Bryant had two hits and stole two bases and James Molinelli added two hits for Cleveland.

Taft 3, Kennedy 2--Jason Shapiro scored on an error in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie at Taft.

Chaminade 10, Bell-Jeff 4--With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Chaminade (7-10, 2-1 in league play) had seven consecutive hits to score six runs at home.

Chaminade’s Pete Miller (3-3) did not allow a hit after the third.

Harvard 13, La Salle 2--Harvard (7-10, 1-2) rode Robby Thayer’s three-run home run and Marty Holly’s two-run shot to a win at home. Bryan Jacobsen pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run and five hits.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 7, Chaminade 1--Brenda Garcia doubled twice and drove in four runs in a San Fernando Valley League game.

Notre Dame 3, Bell-Jeff 1--Karen Erikson, Vivian Carballo and Marie Dalkes had RBI singles as Notre Dame scored three runs in the fourth inning of the San Fernando Valley League game.

Louisville 5, St. Genevieve 4--Gina Tantardino tripled to lead off the sixth and came home on an overthrow to give Louisville the win in a San Fernando Valley League game.

Susan Bergenty, Jennifer Casella, and Shellee Gautreau each had two hits for the Royals (2-8, 1-3).

VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. Notre Dame, 15-0, 15-11, 15-5--Mark Shoptaw had 12 kills and Andre Carlo had 10 blocks as the host Saracens took the San Fernando Valley League match. Harvard (10-0, 6-0) has won 45 consecutive league matches.

Granada Hills d. Birmingham, 15-13, 15-4, 15-5--Highlander Sam Goldman had 10 kills and Tim Elles added eight kills in a nonleague match at Granada Hills.

Taft d. Kennedy, 15-6, 16-14, 15-9--Scott Mehlman and Dave Sarnow had 13 kills each and Gary Reznik had 32 assists for the Toreadors in a West Valley League match at Taft.

Chatsworth d. Cleveland, 15-0, 15-2, 15-5--Greg Weaver had seven kills for Chatsworth (8-0, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.

North Hollywood d. Van Nuys, 15-5, 15-9, 9-15, 15-1--Trung Nguyen and Nestor Marroquin each had 13 kills to lead the Huskies in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Van Nuys.

Reseda d. Sylmar, 15-5, 8-15, 5-15, 15-4, 15-6--Reseda (8-2, 5-0 in conference) won the Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Sylmar behind Coley Kyman’s 21 kills.

TENNIS

Westlake d. Newbury Park, 12-6--The No. 2 doubles team of Jim Abbott and Shawn Campbell swept three sets to lead the Warriors in a Marmonte League match.
