BELLEVILLE, Ill. — An angry judge jailed the mayor and the city attorney of East St. Louis for contempt Friday for failure to appear at a court hearing on their city’s leaking sewer system.
Residents of East St. Louis’ Villa Green housing project had complained after raw sewage leaked from a two-acre pond outside the housing project. The judge had ordered the city to drain the pond but it did not comply.
Mayor Carl Officer and City Atty. Eric Vickers were released on $3,500 bond apiece after spending 1 1/2 hours in the St. Clair County Jail in Belleville, the county seat.
