Prep Roundup : Smith Throws No-Hitter to Lead Garden Grove
Stephanie Smith pitched a no-hitter as Garden Grove High School defeated Pacifica, 5-0, Tuesday in a Garden Grove League softball game at Garden Grove.
Smith (9-4) struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. The Mariners had two runners reach base on errors, in the second and fifth innings.
Smith also had two hits, including a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Garden Grove (9-6 overall, 3-0 in league play) took a 2-0 lead in the third. Rachael Cooper drove in one on a squeeze bunt and Brandie Novack followed with a run-scoring single.
Michelle Cash had a double and a run batted in for Garden Grove.
In other Garden Grove League games:
Kennedy 12, Santiago 1--The Fighting Irish (8-3, 3-0) scored nine runs in the first inning at Santiago. Suzie Berdis had a grand slam and Cheryl Longeway had a two-run homer in the first. Longeway was also the winning pitcher, allowing one hit in four innings.
La Quinta 4, Bolsa Grande 0--The Aztecs (9-4) scored four runs in the first inning as Bobbi Cloyd (7-3) allowed three hits and no walks while striking out five in the complete-game victory.
Los Amigos 17, Rancho Alamitos 0 (5 innings)--Amy Campbell threw a no-hitter, striking out 10, for the Lobos (1-2 in league play) at Los Amigos. Renee Hernandez and Kristen Divino had three hits for Los Amigos.
In the Olympic League:
Capistrano Valley Christian 7, Orange Lutheran 1--Shannon Jacobson went two for four with two RBIs as Kim Cochran struck out 12 and allowed two hits in the Olympic League victory.
Whittier Christian 11, Whitney 1--Veronica Martinez (3-0) pitched a one-hitter, striking out five, for Whittier Christian (3-1, 1-0) at La Mirada Regional Park. Jennifer Pittman had a double, triple and two RBIs for the Heralds.
In nonleague games:
Brea-Olinda 5, Sonora 4--The Wildcats (7-4) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory. Allison Bickel singled home the tying run and Tricia Barr followed with a single to give Brea-Olinda at 5-4 lead. Barr was three for four. Kelly Cook (7-3) allowed only four hits and struck out seven for the victory.
Foothill 6, El Dorado 5--Shannon Ebert singled in the eighth inning to drive in Tanya Fox with the decisive run. Fox, who was two for four, had tripled to open the inning.
Irvine 3, Woodbridge 0--Jennifer Brundage (7-5) pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight, for Irvine (7-5-1) at Heritage Park. Carrie Caudill had two hits, including a double, and a run scored for Irvine.
Laguna Hills 3, Huntington Beach 1--Margo Melendrez pitched a six-hitter, striking out three, for the Hawks (11-4) at Laguna Hills. Melendrez and Aryn McDonald each had RBI singles in the second inning. Shelley Carey added a solo home run in the sixth for the Hawks.
Fountain Valley 4, Sunny Hills 0--Janet Miyahara (5-1) struck out five and allowed only two hits in five innings for the Barons at Sunny Hills. Shannon Harrison had two RBIs for the Barons (10-2-1).
In Century League golf:
El Modena 174, Santa Ana 227--Denny Hathaway shot a one-over-par 32 to lead the Vanguards (7-1, 2-0) to their second Century League victory.
In Empire League golf:
El Dorado 217, Servite 225--Shane Thompson shot a three-over-par 40 for El Dorado (3-1 in league play) at Western Hills Country Club.
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 188, Savanna 209--Chris Tidland shot a one-over-par 36 for the Tigers (7-0, 2-0) at Dad Miller golf course. It was Valencia’s 44th consecutive victory in dual matches.
In Sea View League golf:
Corona del Mar 197, Newport Harbor 222--Jeff Tatch and Steve Dana shot a one-over-par 38 for Corona del Mar (8-0, 2-0) at Costa Mesa municipal golf course.
Estancia 190, University 210--Austin Maki shot a two-under-par 34 for Estancia (7-0, 3-0) at Rancho San Joaquin golf course.
In South Coast League golf:
Irvine 208, Capistrano Valley 210--Scott Auerbach and Troy Walters of Irvine and Ryan Noel of Capistrano Valley all shot 39.
In Sunset League golf:
Edison 221, Ocean View 232--Jason Vanderplas led the Chargers with a 42, tying for medalist honors with Ocean View’s Mike Holmes.
Marina 207, Fountain Valley 214--Marina sophomore Dan Dalton was the medalist, shooting a two-under-par 34 at Mile Square golf course in both teams’ league opener. Marina is 9-2 overall.
In Sunset League girls’ swimming:
Fountain Valley 114, Edison 56--The Barons placed first in nine of 10 events to improve to 2-0 in league meets.
In Angelus League tennis:
Mater Dei 18, Bishop Amat 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Jason Harnett and Mike McFarland swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, to help the Monarchs improve to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Angelus League.
In Century League tennis:
Canyon 13, El Modena 5--Brad Mills swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, for the Vanguards (4-6, 1-0) at El Modena.
In Freeway League boys’ tennis:
Sonora 13, La Habra 5--Matt Rice swept his singles matches, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, to improve his season record to 33-0 and help the Raiders improve to 9-1.
Sunny Hills 13, Fullerton 5--Andrew Duncan and Jason Klingsberg swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 7-6, for the Lancers (8-1, 2-0) at Sunny Hills.
In Pacific Coast League tennis:
Laguna Beach 16, Laguna Hills 2--Graham Gilles swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Aaron Brauer won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, to help lead the Artists. Laguna Beach is 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Woodbridge 18, Costa Mesa 0--Randy Ivey and Alex Stienhardt, the Warriors’ Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, swept their singles matches without losing a game.
