The Chicago Cubs are considering a spring training camp move from Mesa, Ariz., to Orlando, Fla., a newspaper reported today.

The move would occur by 1991, the Chicago Sun-Times said. The Cubs have trained in Arizona for nearly the last four decades, but their lease with the city expires in 1990.

If the move is made, the Cubs would expect a new state-of-the-art stadium and training complex, possibly even in Disney World, the Sun-Times said.

Orlando will become open territory when the Minnesota Twins, who have trained there for 53 years, announce they are leaving for Fort Myers, Fla. Formal word is expected soon. The Twins are leaving Orlando because the city agreed to only $3 million in improvements for Tinker Field, the team’s spring park. The Twins sought $5.5 million.
