NHL Roundup : Lemieux Gets Four Goals, One of Gretzky’s Records in Loss

Scott Young and Ray Ferraro each scored twice as the Hartford Whalers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 9-5, Thursday night at Pittsburgh, despite four goals and a National Hockey League record by Mario Lemieux.

Lemieux’s third goal was shorthanded, his 13th of the season with Pittsburgh at a man disadvantage, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s league record. Lemieux scored his fourth goal in the final minute to raise his league-leading total to 83.

The Whalers converted three of six power-play chances, and rookie goalie Kay Whitmore won his second consecutive start.

The Penguins remained in second place in the Patrick Division, one point ahead of the New York Rangers. Both teams have two games to go, including a showdown Saturday night at Pittsburgh.

Montreal 4, Buffalo 2--Guy Carbonneau scored two goals and Chris Chelios and Brent Gilchrist each had a pair of assists in the win at Buffalo.

The Canadiens improved to 18-4-2 in their last 24 games and moved ahead of Calgary by one point in the battle for the best record in the NHL.

The loss left the Sabres only two points ahead of Hartford for third place in the Adams Division. Hartford and Buffalo both have two games remaining.

Philadelphia 5, Washington 4--The Flyers closed to within three points of third place in the Patrick Division as Tim Kerr scored twice at Philadelphia.

St. Louis 4, Quebec 3--Greg Paslawski scored on a rebound shot 1:39 into overtime to give the Blues the win and a 5-0-1 record in their last six home games.

St. Louis snapped a 2-2 tie when Dave Lowry scored with 8:01 remaining in regulation. But Quebec’s Peter Stastny sent the game into overtime on a goal with 1:09 remaining.
