High School Roundup : Southwest Slips Past Hilltop in Metro Opener
Armando Magallanes scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning as Southwest defeated Hilltop, 6-5, in a Metro Conference opener Thursday at Hilltop.
Freshman pitcher Victor Caracoza (4-0) was the winner for Southwest (7-3, 1-0). Hilltop (3-8, 0-1) scored four runs in the first but couldn’t hold on.
In other Metro Conference games:
Mar Vista 7, Marian 6--The Crusaders led, 6-1, before the Mariners (3-8-1, 1-0) scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh.
Castle Park 10, Coronado 2--Joe Carrillo allowed just one hit through five innings to pick up the victory for Castle Park (15-2, 1-0). Benji Gil was two for four with three RBIs for Castle Park.
Bonita Vista 11, Montgomery 5--Craig Catlin (2-0) drove in four runs and pitched a complete game to lead the Barons (7-8, 1-0) at Montgomery (5-6, 0-1).
Nonleague
Fallbrook 13, El Camino 12--Mike Gainsborough’s grand slam was part of a five-hit, four-walk, nine-run seventh inning for Fallbrook (9-3) at El Camino (4-6). Winner Aaron Hopkins (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings.
Bingham, Utah 6, San Dieguito 4--Tony Maio hit a homer in the fifth to lead Bingham. Tony Sanchez went two for four with an RBI and scored for San Dieguito (8-5-1).
Softball
Metro Conference
Bonita Vista 5, Montgomery 0--Sisters Kalei and Pua Lopez both went three for four to lead Bonita Vista (1-4, 1-1).
