Local News in Brief : Council Votes for Full Recycling Plan

The Los Angeles City Council has voted unanimously and without discussion to direct the city’s Bureau of Sanitation to implement a full recycling program within a year.

“I am not satisfied with the progress that’s been made with implementing what the council directed two years ago,†Councilman Hal Bernson said. “They should have been in operation by now, and frankly, I got tired of waiting.â€

Bernson’s motion did not specify what approach to recycling the city should use, leaving that decision to the bureau. The most commonly discussed strategy would distribute several bins to each household, for separate collection of recyclable paper, aluminum cans, glass bottles, recyclable plastics and non-recyclable items.
