P.M. BRIEFING : Bhopal Settlement Set Aside

From Times wire services

The Supreme Court today set aside a $470-million settlement to victims of the Bhopal gas disaster until it rules on the validity of a law making the government the sole representative of the victims.

Justice Sabyasachi Mukherjee said the settlement “stands stayed for all practical purposes,†although no formal order was issued.

In February the Supreme Court ordered Union Carbide Corp. to pay $470 million to compensate victims of the disaster, considered the world’s worst industrial accident. The order set off a firestorm of criticism from victims and their lawyers, who said the amount was far too low.
