High School Roundup : Hart Sweeps Doubleheader to Win Title

Hart High won both games of a doubleheader Saturday to claim the championship of the Las Vegas Chaparral baseball tournament. The Indians, who finished 4-0 in the round-robin tournament, defeated Boulder City, Nev., 10-3, and Pleasant Grove, Utah, 18-2.

Dave Toledo led Hart against Pleasant Grove game with three hits and three runs batted in. Teammate Lance Migita doubled twice, Chris Vasquez tripled, singled and drove in two runs and Ray Gardoki was two for five with two RBIs.

David Margraves raised his record to 2-0 by scattering eight hits against Pleasant Grove.

Hart (8-1) rolled over Boulder City in the opener as Kevin Foderaro, promoted from the junior varsity for the tournament, pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine.

In other Chaparral tournament games:

La Puente 4, Burroughs 1--The Warriors scored twice in their last at-bat to break open a close game and deny the Indians a shot at the title. A win by Burroughs would have given the Indians a share of the tournament title with Hart.

Earlier Saturday, Chris Westbury tossed a five-hitter, striking out 12, as Burroughs defeated Riverside Perris, 14-1.

Mt. Carmel, Calif. 10, Glendale 2--Glendale dropped its final game to finish 2-2 in the tournament.

Angela Burnham, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, won the 100 in a wind-aided 11.78 seconds Saturday and helped Rio Mesa High win the girls’ team title at the Santa Barbara Easter Relays.

Rio Mesa, which scored 51 points, also won the 400, 800, 1,600 and sprint medley relays.

Agoura (48 points) finished second and won the 3,200 relay in 12:49.99.

In the boys’ division, Patrick Vanscoy won the discus (157 feet) for Rio Mesa, which finished third with 31 points. Agoura (29) finished fourth.
