College Roundup : Frith-Smith’s Complete Game Leads Canyons

Chris Joy had three hits and sophomore right-hander Jeff Frith-Smith pitched a complete game as College of the Canyons beat visiting Cuesta, 12-5, Saturday in a Western State Conference game.

Frith-Smith (4-3) allowed six hits, struck out 11 and walked two to post his team’s first complete game of the season. He held Cuesta (0-6 in WSC play) to one run through eight innings before giving up four runs in the ninth.

Joy doubled and had two runs batted in to pace the Cougars’ 17-hit attack. Ernie Perez and Scott Roth each had two hits and two RBIs for Canyons (11-9, 5-2).

In other baseball games:

Glendale 9, Santa Monica 3--Jeff Ojeda and Marco Asselin began the WSC game with back-to-back triples as the Vaqueros opened a 3-0 lead and never trailed at Santa Monica.

Ojeda also doubled and singled. Tom Ball, D’Artagnan McWhorter, Art Chute and Paul Hugasian had RBI singles. Jaime Aguayo (3-4) pitched a complete game for the win.

Glendale improved to 10-13, 4-4 in conference play.

Cal Lutheran 5-2, Southern California 3-6--The Kingsmen, who trailed by two after four innings, mounted a five-run rally in the fifth inning of the first game and went on to split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Darnell Mitchell, Henry Campos, Anthony Espitia and Darren Cornell each singled in a rally that was prolonged by two Southern California errors.

All the Southern California runs came on solo home runs--two by Paul Plyler and one by Denny Berni.

Jay Anderson (4-1) was credited with the complete-game win.

In the ninth inning of the second game, Plyler pounded a grand slam--his third home run of the afternoon--to break a 2-2 tie and hand Cal Lutheran its first conference loss.

Cal Lutheran (13-7, 5-1) scored both of its second-game runs in a two-out, third-inning flurry. Tim Lewis singled home Cornell and Dan Weis drove pinch-runner Greg Minick home.

All six runs were charged to Mike Clark (1-1).

The Master’s 8-16, La Verne 0-12--Jeff Cole and Dan Bevins hit grand slams to lead the Mustangs to a sweep of La Verne.

Cole, who hit his bases-loaded home run in the fifth inning of the first game, also pitched a four-hit shutout.

Bevins belted his grand slam in the fourth inning of the second game. Peter Wilson added four hits and three RBIs for Masters.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Sacramento 1, Cal State Northridge 0--Debbie Dickmann pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight as Northridge advanced to the championship round of the Bakersfield tournament after finishing second in pool play.

Lisa Erickson had two hits to lead the Lady Matadors (18-9), who will play Mankato State (Minn.) today.

Anna Getherall hit a two-run home run and had three hits and four RBIs to lead Northridge to an 11-0 victory over Concordia (St. Paul, Minn.) in an earlier game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Lady Matadors also shut out Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0, as Heather Lindstrom and Dickmann combined to throw a two-hitter.

Cal Lutheran 7, Cal State Hayward 2 (8 innings)--Brenda Frafjord hit a three-run home run in the eighth as the Regals (12-9) rallied for five runs to advance to the consolation round of the Bakersfield tournament.

Hayward tied the score with two runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. DeeAndra Pilkington (6-2) gave up five hits and struck out one for CLU.
