Tough Sprinkler Law

Anaheim’s City Council has passed Orange County’s strictest fire-sprinkler ordinance for older high-rise buildings. The ordinance, to take effect Jan. 1, 1992, requires all existing buildings 55 feet tall or higher to have sprinkler systems.
Twelve buildings, including two 11-story structures at the Disneyland Hotel, will be affected. Under current city law, all high-rise buildings constructed after 1974 have sprinkler systems.
The ordinance is Anaheim’s reaction to the fire last May that killed one person and caused more than $300 million in damage at the First Interstate Bank building in downtown Los Angeles.
