WORLD : Atrocity Reports Trouble U.S.
WASHINGTON — The United States is concerned by reports that U.S.-backed UNITA rebels in Angola tortured and murdered political rivals but it has no evidence to support the charges, State Department spokesman Charles E. Redman said today.
“We don’t have any information to confirm those reports. We’re always concerned when allegations of this kind are made. We have raised the allegations with UNITA, which has emphatically denied them,†Redman said at a news briefing. UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) is battling the Soviet-backed leftist Angolan government.
