CNBC, NBC’s new cable program service, has dropped plans for a weekend sports package and will offer just consumer, business and financial news on a seven-day, 24-hour-a-day basis. The new service--its initials stand for Consumer News and Business Channel--is due for launch on April 17, when it will begin competing with the established Financial News Network. CNBC, based in Fort Lee, N.J., expects to start off with more than 12.5 million subscribers.
