Roundup : Crenshaw Tops Manual Arts Once Again
Crenshaw High School paid back a year-long debt it owed to Manual Arts by defeating the Toilers for the second time in eight days, 84-72, to win the Southern Regional Division I basketball championship before a crowd of 4,000 Saturday night at the Sports Arena.
Last season, Crenshaw defeated the Toilers for the City 4-A Division championship, and lost to Manual Arts in the State Tournament. A week ago, Crenshaw repeated as City champions with a 85-72 victory over the Toilers.
Terry Cannon scored 23 points and Crenshaw outscored the Toilers, 14-2, in the last minute of the fourth quarter to give Coach Willie West a chance to win his fourth state title.
In the Division II boys’ championship game:
Glendora 61, Dominguez 57--Tracy Murray shook of a slow start to scored 19 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter.
Murray hit four free throws in the final minute to break a 57-57 tie. Dominguez, the Southern Section 4-A champion led, 51-40, earlier in the quarter, then fell behind, 57-55, on a Murray jumper with 1:40 to play before Xavier Edison’s dunk with a minute to go tied the score.
In the Division IV boys’ championship game:
Santa Clara 78, Easton Washington 55--Junious (Bubba) Burrage, a 6-foot-7 senior center, scored 19 points, Shon Tarver added 18 and John McGill scored 16 to spark Santa Clara (24-4).
In the Division V boys’ championship game:
Bel-Air Prep 50, Reedley Immanuel 49--Bel-Air Prep’s Jason Plazola nailed an eight-foot follow shot with five seconds left to lift the Bruins (23-8).
In the Division I girls’ championship game:
Morningside 45, Point Loma 44--Lisa Leslie scored 22 points and Point Loma’s Monica Filer missed a 28-foot shot in the final seconds to allow Morningside, ranked No. 2 in the nation in one poll, to hold on.
In the Division IV girls’ championship game:
Wasco 40, Santa Clara 38--Despite facing a triple-team, Marsheela Harriston scored eight of Wasco’s nine points in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Tigers (23-2).
In the Division V girls’ championship game:
Mission Prep 52, Avenal 48--Chris Mott scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead Mission Prep (24-3).
