A massive modern sculpture, scheduled to be removed Saturday from outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building where it has been a subject of controversy for years, was saved from being dismantled by a last-minute court order.

U. S. District Judge Robert Patterson issued a temporary restraining order late Friday to block the removal of “Tilted Arc,†by Richard Serra, pending a hearing this week. Federal workers for years have complained that the rusting, 12-foot-tall steel work was an eyesore.
