Roundup : Irvine Women Hang On for Tennis Victory
UC Irvine’s doubles team of Courtney Weichsel and Kathy Rose defeated Chris Frey and Sophia Ray, 6-1, 6-4, to clinch a 5-4 victory over Pennsylvania in a nonconference women’s tennis match Thursday at Irvine.
Irvine won four of the six singles matches to take a commanding lead going into the doubles. After Weichsel and Rose won, Irvine forfeited its final doubles match.
Stacey Cadigan of Irvine defeated Gen Hyacin, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, in a singles match that lasted almost 3 1/2 hours. Melissa Vaccaro of Irvine defeated Kris Gardner, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Vaccaro won the final set tiebreaker, 7-0.
Irvine (6-9) plays host to Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. today.
In nonconference baseball:
Southern California College 4, Regis 2--Doug Rystrom pitched a seven-hitter with 11 strikeouts for host Southern California (9-9). SCC scored four runs in the sixth to erase a 2-0 deficit. Kevin Kasper had an RBI triple, Denny Berni had an RBI single and Vance Costelow squeezed in another run for SCC. Regis is 4-4.
In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Southern California College 4-1, Azusa Pacific 0-3--Susie Hopkins pitched a four-hitter and had three hits and an RBI for host SCC (7-9, 1-3) in the first game. Linda Bilyeu had four hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs for SCC in the first game.
