College Basketball Roundup : Penn State Roughs Up No. 13 West Virginia, 86-64

Junior center Ed Fogell helped make Penn State history at the 62-year-old Palestra in Philadelphia Monday night by scoring 28 points as the Nittany Lions upset 13th-ranked West Virginia, 86-64, and advanced to the Atlantic 10 tournament final for the first time.

Penn State (19-10), which had never advanced past the tournament quarterfinals, will play Rutgers for the title Thursday.

Fogell made eight of 10 shots and 12 of 14 free throws as the Nittany Lions beat West Virginia for only the third time in 18 meetings.

Penn State increased a 39-30 halftime lead to as many as 23 points.

Chris Brooks scored 17 points for the Mountaineers (25-4), who committed 23 turnovers.

Rutgers 62, Temple 59--Craig Carter scored 16 points, four in overtime, and the Scarlet Knights defeated the defending Atlantic 10 champion Owls in the second game at Philadelphia.

Tom Savage and Rick Dadika each scored 14 points for Rutgers (17-12). Mark Macon scored 19 points and Mike Vreeswyk had 18 for Temple (18-11).

George Mason 78, N.C. Wilmington 72--Mike Hargett and Chuck Broadnax hit three-pointers in overtime to propel the Patriots to their first appearance in the NCAA tournament with the victory over the Seahawks in the title game of the Colonial Athletic Assn. tournament at Hampton, Va.

Kenny Sanders had 19 points and 19 rebounds for George Mason (20-10). Larry Houzer had 29 points for the Seahawks (16-14).

Arkansas 107, Houston 79--Keith Wilson and Todd Day scored 14 points each in the first half as the Razorbacks opened a big lead and clinched the Southwest Conference championship with the victory at Fayetteville, Ark.

The game, scheduled for Sunday, was delayed 30 hours when an ice storm prevented the Cougars from leaving Texas.

Arkansas (21-6, 13-3) earned its first SWC title since 1982.

Craig Upchurch had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars (17-13, 8-8).

South Alabama 105, Jacksonville 59--Gabriel Estaba scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as top-seeded South Alabama used a 28-0 run to beat the Dolphins in the Sun Belt Conference tournament final at Charlotte, N.C.

Notre Dame 76, Butler 69--Jamere Jackson had 17 points and Elmer Bennett hit three free throws in the last 38 seconds as the Irish (19-7) won at Indianapolis.
