LOCAL : Alien Sweeps Extend to John Wayne
Immigration agents looking for suspected illegal aliens boarding flights out of Southern California expanded their search to John Wayne Airport but made no arrests there, authorities said today.
Immigration and Naturalization Service agents, who have regularly swept Los Angeles International Airport during the past week, added Long Beach, Orange County’s John Wayne and Ontario International Airport in San Bernardino County to the list on Monday night.
Agents took 17 undocumented aliens into custody at Ontario and 56 illegal immigrants at Los Angeles International, INS District Director Ernest Gustafson said. There were no arrests at John Wayne or Long Beach, he said.
INS agents have arrested 374 suspected illegal aliens at Southern California airports since the sweeps began last week, Gustafson said.
