Nine UC Santa Barbara students broke a 12-day fast, protesting what they say are racist conditions at the Goleta campus and in the UC system. State Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles), chairman of the Senate Special Committee on UC Admissions, persuaded the students to suspend the strike. Torres plans to introduce legislation next week requiring UC schools to plan courses in ethnic studies. The students said negotiations with the administration will continue.
