Tennis Roundup : Gilbert Beats Pernfors, Gets to WCT Final
Brad Gilbert, a last-minute replacement when Boris Becker got the flu, reached the championship match of the WCT Finals Thursday night with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 semifinal victory over Mikael Pernfors of Sweden at Dallas.
Gilbert plays in Saturday’s final against the winner of tonight’s Ivan Lendl-John McEnroe semifinal.
Betsy Nagelsen upset top-seeded Lori McNeil, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in a $100,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Oklahoma City.
Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands surprised second-seeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union defeated Marianne Werdel, 7-6, 7-6.
Sixth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Australia beat West Germany’s Eva Pfaff, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the U.S. Women’s Hardcourt Championships at San Antonio.
Eighth-seeded Terry Phelps beat unseeded Dinky Van Rensburg of South Africa, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
