THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : UC Irvine Women Lose to Long Beach
UC Irvine’s women’s basketball team played Cal State Long Beach tough for a half Thursday but the 49ers rallied for a 97-68 victory in a Big West Conference game at Irvine.
Cheryl Dowell, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, scored the first four points of a 12-0 run to start the second half for Long Beach (24-4, 17-0), which has won 17 in a row.
Penny Toler scored 21 points for Long Beach. Natasha Parks and Kathy Lizarraga scored 15 points each for Irvine, which was tied, 41-41, at the half. Parks had 12 rebounds for Irvine (8-18, 4-13).
In California Collegiate Athletic Ass, women’s basketball:
Cal State Northridge 89, Chapman 73--Host Chapman led, 39-38, at the half but was outscored in the second half, 51-34. Bridgette Ealy scored 23 points to lead Northridge. Julie King scored 16 for Chapman.
In the National Christian College Division II men’s national basketball championship tournament:
Pacific Coast Christian 89, Pilsbery 73--Steve Heard and Steve Welch scored 18 points to lead PCC (18-11) in the first-round game at Jimmy Swaggart Bible College in Baton Rouge, La. Brian Keiser added 14, Garrett Crayton 13 and Mike deVries 11 for PCC.
In the National Christian College Athletic Assn. Division II women’s basketball tournament:
Pacific Coast Christian 76, Moody Bible (Chicago) 46--Kris Dodson scored 22 points for lead Pacific Coast Christian in the first round of the Kentucky Christian College in Grayson, Ky. Angie Revert and Jody Pierce scored 14 points each, Gina Atkins 11 and Donna Allen 10 for PCC (18-11).
