College Basketball Roundup : Barros Scores 31 as Boston College Upsets Syracuse
Dana Barros scored 31 points as Boston College stunned No. 6 Syracuse, 90-87, in a Big East game Thursday night at Newton, Mass.
Barros gave Boston College the lead for good when he sank two free throws to give the Eagles an 82-81 lead with 1:41 remaining. Barros followed with an off-balance 15-foot jumper to make it 84-81 with 40 seconds left.
Sherman Douglas, who led Syracuse with 24 points, missed a three-point shot with 26 seconds to go and Bobby Moran sank two free throws for Boston College four seconds later.
Douglas’ layup with 16 seconds left made it 86-83, but the Orangemen came no closer.
Doug Able had a career-high 22 points and Moran added 10 for Boston College. Thompson, Matt Roe and Derrick Coleman each had 16 for Syracuse.
Boston College is 11-15 overall and 3-12 in the Big East. Syracuse is 24-6 and 9-6.
Michigan State 83, Iowa 81--Kirk Manns made five three-point shots and scored 22 points and Steve Smith hit the go-ahead free throws as the Spartans stunned the No. 11 Hawkeyes in a Big Ten game at Iowa City, Iowa.
Smith’s two free throws with 1:45 to play gave the Spartans (14-12, 5-11) an 81-80 lead and thwarted a rally by Iowa (21-7, 9-6).
B.J. Armstrong had a chance to tie the game at 81-81, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one. Mark Montgomery converted two foul shots with 33 seconds to play to give Michigan State an 83-80 lead.
Illinois 63, Minnesota 58--Nick Anderson scored 19 points as the No. 8 Illini won a Big Ten game at Champaign, Ill.
Illinois (24-4, 11-4) avenged an earlier loss to the Gophers (14-11, 6-9).
Purdue 65, Wisconsin 60--Tony Jones scored 15 points, including two free throws that gave the Boilermakers (13-16, 6-10) a 63-58 lead with 27 seconds left at West Lafayette, Ind. The Badgers (16-9, 7-8) have lost 24 straight to Purdue.
North Carolina St. 94, Maryland 77--Chucky Brown scored 23 points and Rodney Monroe added 22 to spark the No. 20 Wolfpack (19-7, 9-4) over the Terrapins (8-18, 1-12) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.
Colorado State 75, Utah 64--Pat Durham scored 21 points as the Rams (19-8, 11-4) defeated the Utes (15-15, 6-9) at Salt Lake City and and remained tied with New Mexico for the Western Athletic Conference lead.
New Mexico 102, San Diego State 72--Charlie Thomas scored 20 points as the Lobos (11-4, 19-8) beat the Aztecs (12-15, 4-11) at Albuquerque, N.M.
