Sovereign Mine, an outstanding 3-year-old trotting filly, overcame a break before the start and still won by more than four lengths Wednesday in the feature race at Los Alamitos Race Course.
It was Sovereign Mine’s 10th consecutive victory. Her share of the $20,000 California Sires Stakes purse increased her 1989 earnings to $49,121. The stakes win was her fifth stakes victory in a row.
Steve Desomer quickly gathered his filly’s composure after a rough start and moved up quickly into second behind Mehitabelle, who got off to a flying start. Sacramento Storm was eliminated by her break. The third favorite Davids Cupid broke on the first turn.
Carmen Sweet challenged Sovereign Mine on the backstretch. She moved up head and head on the final turn but couldn’t match Sovereign Mine the final eighth. Mehitabelle battled hard and just nosed out Carmen Sweet for second. Sovereign Mine paid $2.40 to win.
