Local News in Brief : Yearlong Centennial Celebration Ending
San Pedro’s yearlong centennial celebration began to wind down over the weekend with a New Orleans-style funeral procession through the streets of the community’s downtown where residents staged a mock burial of two time capsules.
The capsules will actually be buried in about a week. One will contain contributions from San Pedro’s schoolchildren--including their written and tape-recorded thoughts on the future--and is to be opened in 25 years. The other, to be opened in 100 years, will contain local memorabilia and is designed to reflect San Pedro’s ethnic diversity.
The centennial celebrates the 100th anniversary of San Pedro’s incorporation as an independent city, although the community was annexed by Los Angeles 80 years ago.
