FCC Rules on Phone Service: The FCC ordered five companies that provide long-distance telephone service in hotels, airports, hospitals and other public places to fully inform users of whose service they’re using and how much it will cost. These providers of so-called alternative operator services also must not block callers from using other long-distance carriers, the FCC said. However, the FCC decided not to regulate alternative operator service rates, which have caused numerous complaints from those making collect or credit card calls who sometimes get a big surprise when they receive their bill later at home.
