College Roundup : Chapman Roars Back to Beat Azusa Pacific

Chapman College rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat Azusa Pacific, 11-7, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Azusa Pacific.

The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.

The Panthers (6-7) trailed, 7-1, after five innings, but scored seven runs in the sixth with five walks, two of which forced in runs. Jeff Kidwell, who had three hits, had an run-scoring double in the inning.

John Hulshof pitched five innings in relief for the victory. Hulshof (2-2) allowed two runs, struck out five and walked only one.

Jody Garcia had four hits and four RBIs for Chapman. Tom Allison had three hits and an RBI and Jason Rolish had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the Panthers.

In another nonconference game:

UC Irvine 11, Cal Poly Pomona 7--Brian Young hit a grand slam in the ninth for the Anteaters (4-7-1) at Pomona. It was the third home run of the season for Young, a junior outfielder from Rancho Santiago College. Cal Poly Pomona is 1-9.

Southern California College 5, The Master’s 3--Denny Berni had a two-run double in the fifth to give host SCC a 4-3 lead. SCC scored its final run in the sixth on an RBI triple by Kendall Kasper. Robert Mansfield (3-1) went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out six. SCC is 5-3.
