Mike Mansfield, former U.S. Senate majority leader, has taken a position as counselor for Far Eastern affairs at Goldman, Sachs & Co., a New York investment banking firm. The 85-year-old Mansfield, a Democrat from Montana, stepped down late last year after 11 years as ambassador to Japan. He was appointed to the post in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter after retiring from the Senate. He had been the longest serving Senate majority leader.
