AT&T; Announces Major Reorganization

NEW YORK — American Telephone & Telegraph Co. is beginning a major reorganization aimed at making it more competitive, but analysts see no quick fix as the telephone giant retools to face its scrappy competitors.
Chairman Robert E. Allen has authorized a sweeping reorganization that will divide the New York-based company’s operating groups into as many as 25 units, William Mullane, an AT&T; corporate vice president and spokesman, said, adding that the changes will be phased in over time.
The units, which will focus on specific areas such as consumer products, will be run as much as possible like independent businesses, he said.
