Undefeated CSUN Primes for Weekend by Beating Master’s

The apprenticeship is over.

Cal State Northridge defeated The Master’s College, 6-3, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Northridge behind the complete-game performance of freshman right-hander Steve Sullivan.

Today, however, Northridge (4-0) will get its first legitimate test of the season when the Division II Matadors travel to play unbeaten Cal State Long Beach (8-0) before returning home to play host to another Division I school, St. Mary’s, in a two-game series Saturday and Sunday. Because of facility improvement work being done on the Long Beach campus, today’s game will be played at 2 p.m. at Long Beach City College.

“The next three games are going to let us know where we’re really at right now,” said Northridge left-fielder Craig Clayton, a freshman who had three of the Matadors’ seven hits off Eric Schumaker, the starter for Master’s (0-5-1).

Sullivan (1-0) gave up four hits, recorded three strikeouts and issued four walks.

Northridge capitalized on a bases-loaded throwing error by Master’s third baseman Peter Wilson to score three runs in the third inning.

CSUN broke the game open in the sixth when Denny Vigo singled to left, scoring Clayton and Chae-Ho Chong, who had singled and doubled, respectively.
