Sprinklers Douse Fire on Oil Tanker
Overheated bearing packing in the pumping room of an oil tanker docked at the Long Beach Pier sparked a fire Thursday that was quickly extinguished by sprinklers aboard the vessel, officials said.
There were no reports of injuries from the fire, but smoke spread through much of the tanker, Arco Alaska, causing minor damage, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Bob Caldon said.
Investigators believe that packing around pump bearings overheated and triggered a fire in fuel oil, Caldon said.
City firefighters and Coast Guard crews assisted workers aboard the tanker in blowing the smoke from the vessel.
