World : Hijacker Diverts Jet to Costa Rica
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — A lone hijacker seized control today of a Colombian airliner with 116 passengers aboard, authorities said, and surrendered after diverting the plane to Costa Rica.
The Ace Airline Boeing 727 was commandeered at about 11 a.m. after taking off from San Andres Island, Colombia, en route to the city of Medellin, the Civil Aeronautics Department of Colombia said. Radio Reloj, a Costa Rican radio station, said it received an anonymous telephone call saying the hijacker was seeking the freedom of an American and several Colombians under arrest in Costa Rica on drug charges.
