A Tustin man was killed Monday when the motorcycle he was driving in a car-pool lane ran into a vehicle that had slowed on the Costa Mesa Freeway, police said.

Leroy Darlington, 53, sustained fatal head injuries in the crash, which occurred at 7:55 a.m. south of Katella Avenue, CHP Officer Michael Lundquist said. Darlington was not wearing a helmet.

Lundquist said a northbound 1982 Honda Accord driven by Robin Berilla, 33, of San Dimas was braking in slowing traffic when she lost control of the car and swerved into the car-pool lane. A second vehicle already in the car-pool lane hit the Honda, he said. When a third vehicle slowed to avoid the other two, Darlington’s motorcycle struck it from behind, Lundquist said.

The other drivers suffered minor injuries in the accident, which slowed traffic for about an hour in both directions, Lundquist said.
