San Diego State has received oral commitments from two more high school seniors, raising to at least nine the number of players who have announced plans to attend SDSU next season.
Kipp Jeffries, a 5-foot 8-inch, 165-pound running back from Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga, and Steve Ruthenbeck, a 6-4 1/4, 231-pound tight end from El Camino High School in Sacramento, said they have committed to the Aztecs.
Jeffries rushed for 1,038 yards and 13 touchdowns on 186 carries last season. He also returned two punts and two interceptions for touchdowns. Jeffries also visited Utah.
Ruthenbeck, who caught 41 passes for 512 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2 seasons, also visited Brigham Young and Utah.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State upset Santa Barbara, 16-14, 17-15, to advance to the championship game of the Grand Prix Classic at Peterson Gym tonight at 7:30.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Gordon McNeill’s 23 points and 12 rebounds led UC San Diego (6-13) to an 85-74 nonconference victory over UC Santa Cruz (5-15) at Triton Gymnasium. Kirk Kramer added 18 points for UCSD. The Tritons dropped to 6-13. UCSD led, 43-31, at halftime.
MEN’S TENNIS
The University of San Diego opened its 1989 season with a 7-2 nonleague loss to host UCLA. The Toreros’ only points came in singles. No. 2 David Stewart defeated Patrick Galbrith, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 4 Chris Toomey defeated Giora Payes, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.
Top-ranked UCLA improved to 3-0 after shutting out the Toreros in doubles.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Host UC San Diego won its seventh consecutive game, routing UC Santa Cruz, 98-36, led by Jill Coster and Tracy Ragatz with 18 points apiece. UCSD (13-4), which took a 16-0 lead, shot a school record 55%. UC Santa Cruz is 5-13.
Candida Echeverria’s 18-foot jumper with 4 seconds to play missed the mark, and the University of San Diego lost to host Santa Clara, 66-64, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game. Echeverria’s 19 points led USD (6-9, 2-3). Paula Mascari added 13 points for USD and Julie Lemery had 12.
