Less than a year after moving its corporate headquarters to Irvine, American Stores Co. has decided to move back to Salt Lake City. Chief Executive Jonathan L. Scott will return to the Salt Lake offices on Wednesday. Other corporate personnel are expected to move shortly thereafter, company spokesman Troy D’Ambrosio said. The relocation involves about 30 people. American, which owns the Alpha Beta and Lucky supermarket chains, moved to Irvine in July, 1988, on the recommendation of a consulting firm, according to the company’s 1988 annual report. No reason was given for the decision to return to Salt Lake City.
